Although this is entitled 'The Big Lake Years', it covers from the time I started junior high school to the time I joined the Navy. The majority of the time was spent in Big Lake, Texas. Fortunately, we lived in Enid, Oklahoma, for only three months before moving to Big Lake. Those were the only three months I lived outside of the state of Texas from birth until the Navy. The three-day trip from Enid to Big Lake was fun because we were hauling our trailer house with us. At least the house we lived in was the same. I was entering Junior High School and wondering if I would be in the same place to finish the year. Since Dutch worked in the oil field, we would move often, sometimes within months of moving in. But since Big Lake was an oil town, I hoped that we would not be called "oilfield trash" or "white trash" like we were called elsewhere. I started 6th grade and stayed through high school in Big Lake. After I finished high school, I moved back to Gainesville for a few weeks and the family moved to Barnhart. Then, I went to Barnhart for a week then to Midland and finally ended up in Dallas. After living in Dallas about a year, I moved back to Barnhart for four months and then joined the Navy in San Angelo.
