Goehring

Johann Goehring

and his wife, Charlotte Henriette, came to America in 1853 with a family of five. Accompanying them were William, John Lewis, Caesar August, Frederick (Fritz) Albert and Emilia. They arrived at Indianola, Texas, on the Oldenburg brig Texas from Friedeberg.

According to ship records, this family came from Gurkow which probably was located in the part of Prussia that is in Poland today. It is possible that modern day Gorki Notec is the homeland of this particular line of the Göhrings.

Johann Goehring and his family lived in the Callahan Settlement near Yorktown, later in Meyersville and finally moved to Clinton, near Cuero, on the Guadalupe River. Four more children, Robert, Alvina, Herman and Rudolf were born after Johann and Charlotte arrived in America.

Johann hauled freight from Indianola and Old Powder Horn to San Antonio with oxen to provide for his family. When Johann died in 1862, his son Fritz, age 13, had to follow in his father's footsteps hauling freight as his father had.

Johann Goehring gave a piece of land to build a little church in the Callahan Settlement. He and Charlotte are buried in the Callahan Cemetery near Yorktown.

Frederick (Fritz) Albert Goehring

was born in Germany, 25 April 1849 to Johann Goehring and his wife, Charlotte Henriette. He came to America at the age of four years in 1853.

When his father died, Fritz continued in his father's footsteps, hauling freight from Indianola and Old Powder Horn to San Antonio with oxen, hitched to wagons and sleds since horses were not available. He went into Mexico and hauled freight for the Confederates. Although Fritz did not actively serve in combat, according to Civil War pension records, his brothers William, John Lewis and August all served in the Civil War.

Fritz was 23 years old when he married Charlotte Boldt of the Callahan Community on 5 January 1873. Theirs is the first marriage recorded in church records of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Yorktown, Texas. Thirteen children were born to this union. A set of twins died in infancy. This couple lived to celebrate 63 years of wedded bliss. Johann and Charlotte had 40 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren.

Charlotte was the daughter of Fritz and Albertina Boldt. She was born in Clinton, Texas, 2 December 1855. She had two sisters, Ernestina and Mathilda, and two brothers, William and Christian. Her mother's parents were from Italy and her maiden name was Kannevasch.

Albert Adolf Fredrich Goehring

was born in Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas, 28 October 1873. Albert married Bertha Helena Hennig on 20 January 1894 in DeWitt County, Texas. Sometime after their marriage, Albert and Bertha moved northward to the Cambridge area just east of Henrietta, Clay County, Texas. Here, Albert started farming while Bertha ran the household. Their union produced twelve children but their marriage appeared to not last.

When Albert died on 18 May 1956, he had been living in Houston for 26 years and had worked various night watchman jobs in the area. Records indicate that Bertha was probably in Grays Rest Home since about the same time Albert left Henrietta. Bertha died at the rest home on 21 October 1964.

Alfred Ferdinand Goehring, Sr

was the fourth child of Albert and Bertha. He was born in Henrietta, Texas, on 20 April 1898 and married Ellen Elizabeth Spangler (see Spangler) on 22 December 1923. Alfred and Ellen had four children but only two survived to adulthood.

Alfred tried to make a living as a farmer to support his family but he died young on 23 February 1937 leaving Ellen to care for two children, both under 10 years old.

Howard Alton Goehring

was the fourth child of Alfred and Ellen. 'Dutch' attended school in Henrietta but used every excuse to go to the ranch of his uncles. There, he learned how to ranch and ride horses. But after serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he decided to make his living off of the oilfield.

Dutch worked for various companies during his lifetime but spent the most years with FWA, Inc. His chosen occupation forced him to move throughout Texas and Oklahoma. In the 1950's, he married Leta Muriel Scarber (see Scarber). Once he decided to retire, he moved to a small ranch in Montague County, Texas, where he died on 19 February 1987.

Robert Lynn Goehring

served more than 24 years in the U.S. Navy. His duty stations are scattered throughout the United States and Europe.

He met and married Sharon Lee Bahr (see Bahr) while they were both stationed in Augsburg, Germany.

Robert obtained his degree in Management Studies during his time in the Navy. He and Sharon have two wonderful children.
